Ophiopogon japonicus (Linn. f.) Ker-Gawl.) is native to China, and is also found in Japan, Viet Nam, and India. It is cultivated in southern China and other places. It is born in the shade of mountain slopes, under forests or beside streams below 2,000 meters above sea level. The small root of Mai Dong is a traditional Chinese medicine, which has the effect of quenching thirst, moistening the lungs and relieving cough.
